Well, it's been a couple of months since the end of the season and finally I've gotten round to organising the presentation ceremony. Sorry, I've been very busy. Beer doesn't drink itself you know. Anywho, this year's end-of-season bash will take place at the Emmbrook Inn on Sunday 6th December, from 7 p.m. . There will be a buffet available for those who fancy it and the presentation itself will take place no later than 7.30. Sadly I have to dash off and run the pub quiz at the Brewers by 8 so don't expect a long ceremony!
Hopefully there'll be a few of you there, but don't worry if you can't make it as attendance is not compulsory. It'll probably be a very low-key affair anyway.
Well, it's been nearly 6 months since the start of the season but finally, with the nights drawing in and temperatures plummeting, the time has come to draw stumps on another fine season. The Wanderers were runaway winners in the end but let's also applaud the effort of the Jolly Farmer, who made up for last season's shocking performance with a fine silver medal. A 3-0 victory over the Brewers last night confirmed their runners-up status, just edging out neighbourhood rivals the Elephant & Castle. The Evil Empire will have to be content with bottom step on the podium. Better luck next year lads.
You can hopefully view the league table here. Also, above are some pictures of the Norreys Barn team, in fancy dress for their match against the Wanderers. I think I'll make it compulsory next season.
Hearty congratulations to the Wanderers, who roundly stuffed the Brewers this week to confirm their status as champions. Hopefully the league link will now work, but let me know if not. The end of season bash will be announced soon, and will of course take place at the Emmbrook Inn, seeing as they are deserved champions. I couldn't honestly give a shit if you don't bother sending me your results this week, or for the next two. Nobody really cares!
Hope you all enjoyed the season. Well done to the Wanderers. Feel free to call them all tossers behind their backs.
Well, the results are in and the Wanderers proved their quality with resounding successes over both the Jolly AND the Queen's Head in the same week. With 3 points guaranteed for their final fixture against the Brams, and the Elephant sadly succumbing to the Bell & Bottle, last year's champions are now cruising to victory, and need only a victory against the Brewers this evening to officially retain their crown. Obviously there's no chance on God's green earth we have any intention of letting this happen. Rest assured, the knives will be out! (Literally, if necessary.)
Meanwhile the Brewers turned up to the Hope & Anchor with a depleted team of seven last week, but still ran roughshod over them for a comprehensive 3-0 win. What fun. The Jolly saw off the Frog & Wicket 2-1 but now have to win all their remaining fixtures 3-0 and hope for miracles from other teams just to tie with the leaders. Good luck with that!
Here are the results, and league table. Wish us luck this evening. May the force be with us.
Here are all the scores I have from the last two weeks. Sadly some teams have been a bit remiss in sending me their results so there are a couple of gaps. Also the Bramshill Hunt have now officially dropped out after struggling to get a team together all season. Shame. Any teams yet to play them will obviously receive 3 points for a forfeit. At the sharp end of the table, meanwhile, the Wanderers tightened their grip on proceedings with a 3-0 drubbing of the Hope & Anchor, whilst all their nearest rivals dropped at least one leg to their opponents. However, last week's crunch match between the Wanderers and the Jolly Farmer was postponed, and will quite possibly take place tonight. With the Queen's Head eagerly awaiting them on Wednesday night, this next two days will be make or break for our current leaders.
This week promises to be busier than ever league-wise owing to last week's rescheduled matches, two of which have happily already taken place. Sadly the Bell & Bottle couldn't find their A game against the surging Wanderers, succumbing to a 3-0 spitroasting that leaves them floundering in 5th place. The Wanderers also had another filip when close rivals the Elephant & Castle somehow lost to the Frog & Wicket, leaving last year's champions 3 points clear at the top of the table. Something must be done. However with a tough run-in including all 3 of the teams directly behind them - not to mention the Brewers - the Wanderers won't be counting those chickens just yet.
Woefully few results in this week, mainly due to teams not reporting in. The Brewers braved the elements - and the cauldron that is Norreys Barn - and we were rewarded for our efforts by being drubbed 3-0. Bit harsh. The crucial match between two of the big guns - the Wanderers and the Bell & Bottle - was postponed due to the weather but will hopefully take place very soon. Also wimping out were the Elephant and the Frog & Wicket, leaving the Jolly Farmer to take the bull by the horns with a 2-1 win over the Hope & Anchor. This leaves them as, once again, provisional leaders, as you can see from the table. Sadly I have no idea about the other results or whether the other teams even played. Perhaps their carrier pigeons were struck by lightning.
Further horror for the good guys at the Brewers this week, as the clowns from the Frog & Wicket took it upon themselves to snap their prolonged and frankly hilarious losing streak with a 2-1 win. Gits. Landlord Mark also took great delight in texting me the result before we'd even concluded the 3rd leg and when I was standing not 20 feet away from him, which I'm sure you'll all agree is a bit below the belt. Ah well, let them have their day in the sun. I'm sure they'll get stuffed this week.
Elsewhere, the Jolly have gratefully spooned up another 3 points thanks to a forfeit from the Brams, which, coupled with their 3-0 trouncing of the Bell & Bottle the week before, leaves them firmly in the reckoning. The Wanderers continued their annoying run by plucking and stuffing the Pheasant 3-0, but the Evil Empire are also keeping up with the Joneses by feasting on a large portion of Dog & Duck. The Queen's Head have taken a chance by not informing me of their result, perhaps hoping that I'll gaze into the ether again and maybe come up with the right result this time. This means that they are, provisionally, no longer top of the table. More fool them.
As a hilarious postscript to the whole Brams/Queen's Guessgate fiasco, I've just learnt from the landlord of the Brewers that he misinformed me, and the Queen's actually won 3-0 this week. Marvellous. Here is the updated league table. I pray to God it's right.
Laughs aplenty at the Dog & Duck this week, where malicious saboteurs (or kids) had taken great delight in ripping the Aunt Sally pole from the ground in the afternoon before our match. With a distinct lack of engineering prowess and only a small and ineffective toffee hammer available, all attempts to drive the thing back into the sun-baked ground proved comically futile. Help was at hand though, as a conveniently placed traffic cone slipped neatly over the top to provide some measure of stability, and the Brewers team never tired of shouting out cone! instead of iron, and then rolling about with laughter for the next five minutes. Simple things...
The Dog clearly had record-breaking in mind in their first leg. After drilling their first stick and setting Brewers' hearts aflutter, they then proceeded to miss their next 47, to finish with a remarkable score of 1. This topples the previous record of 44 consecutive misses in one leg set by the Hope & Anchor. Congratulations all round.
Elsewhere, the Wanderers continued their worryingly fine form with a 3-0 over Norreys Barn, who apparently all turned up in fancy dress. Any photographic evidence of this would be much appreciated. The Evil Empire kept themselves bang in contention with a 3-0 stuffing of the Brams, but the Queen's Head have lost their grip on the league with a 3-0 reverse to the Frog & Wicket. As consolation, though, I have now been informed that they did in fact only lose 2-1 to the Brams a few weeks ago. Doubtless next someone will tell me they actually won 2-1. What fun.
There were also a couple of minor inaccuracies in the league table, which I believe I have now corrected. However I would like to make sure that everything is correct as it is a very close league this year and I wouldn't want a stewards' enquiry at the end of it over some crucial boob I've made. If everyone could send me their complete results for the year then that would be a great help. Ta.
Here are the results in thus far, with league table. The Evil Empire are provisionally top again as the Bell & Bottle have not checked in with their result. Tsk tsk.
Well, in the grand tradition of comedy league-running and with a wilful disregard for accurate reportage, I decided to take a chance yesterday and guess the result of the week 12 Queen's Head - Bramshill Hunt match. I guess that's why everyone knows me as Gambler Bill. I guess that also explains why I'm not living in Monte Carlo quaffing endless magnums of Krug in the Hotel de Paris, as I couldn't have got the result any wronger. It seemed reasonable to assume that the Queen's - topping the table with only two defeats to their name - might just make short work of the Brams, themselves propping up the league with only 2 legs to their name. But then this league, like a woman, has proved to be anything but sane and predictable, and with impeccable comic timing the Brams finally remembered how to play the game by trouncing the Queen's 3-0! As you can imagine, this has led to quite a seismic shift in the league table, with the Bell & Bottle marching to the top like Hitler annexing the Sudetenland. With only 3 points separating the top five teams, this thing is now wide open.
Apologies for not updating a great deal recently. Contrary to popular opinion, it isn't because the Brewers haven't been winning - in fact we just snapped our 11-leg losing streak against the Brams - but rather that I've been away in weird places without any wifi access. Anyway, no need to panic as I'm back now. In the league, meanwhile, the Queen's Head have seemingly turned into some sort of Medusa, wiping other teams out 3-0 at will and thus surging an astonishing 4 points clear at the top. Nearest challengers the Bell & Bottle are also on a wild streak, having not lost a game since week 3, while the Evil Empire have also rediscovered their touch with consecutive 3-0 stompings. Also squirming their way up the table are the Wanderers - helped by winning their doubleheader with the Dog & Duck 3-0, 3-0 - while previous runaway leaders the Jolly Farmer now find themselves languishing in 5th after consecutive losses. Oh how the mighty have fallen...
Here are all the results from the last two weeks. Enjoy!
Pheasant 2 - 1 Jolly Evil Empire 3 - 0 Brewers Bell & Bottle 2 - 1 Norreys Brams 0 - 3 Queen's Head (although that's actually just an educated guess as nobody has told me yet) Hope & A 3 - 0 Frog Dog & Duck 0 - 3 Wanderers Wanderers 3 - 0 Dog & Duck (rearranged from week 1) Bell & Bottle 2 - 1 Frog (rearranged from week 11) Jolly 0 - 3 Evil Empire Pheasant 1 - 2 Bell & Bottle Brewers 3 - 0 Brams Norreys 3 - 0 Hope & A Queen's Head 3 - 0 Dog & Duck Frog 1 - 2 Wanderers
Well it's been a couple of weeks since my last update. Apologies. Anyway, needless to say the league has somehow survived without me, although sadly the same cannot be said of the Brewers' championship campaign. Consecutive 3-0 defeats (to the despicable Queen's Head, and the equally abhorrent Jolly Farmer) have sent us freefalling down the table, never again to experience the heady delights of joint-third place. Bugger. At the top, meanwhile, the Jolly and the Queen's are now locked together like two big locking things, with the Bell & Bottle beetling their way into third despite not even telling me their latest result. The Evil Empire continue to lurk menacingly in 4th, but a 3-0 defeat to the Queen's last week has blunted their tusks, while the sodding Wanderers have also had the cheek to overhaul the Brewers and now sit somewhat smugly in 5th. Aaargh.
I won't even mention the bottom half of the table, as I don't want to embarrass anybody (except maybe the Frog & Wicket). Must try harder.
Here is the league table, although I am still missing some results. Enjoy.
Last week we saw a veritable clash of the titans, as the top two in the league faced off for the first time. It was the Jolly Farmer who took the honours in fine style, decapitating the Queen's Head 3-0 to send themselves roaring to the top by a clear 3 points. Elsewhere the Bell & Bottle continued their excellent form with a 3-0 drubbing of basement-dwellers the Brams, which catapults them all the way from 5th to the dizzy heights of joint second. The Brewers sadly lost a squeaker to the Wanderers by a single stick, while the Elephant & Castle somehow found a way to lose against the Hope & Anchor, and have now slipped all the way down to fourth. Here is the league table. Enjoy!
Amazingly, the league table is now up-to-date and all last week's results are in. After losing their first five, Norreys Barn have now won three in a row - albeit with a forfeit win against the Dog & Duck - and sit comfortably in mid-division on 12 points. Well done them. The Jolly Farmer, meanwhile, still lurk menacingly close to the top of the table, having leapt to 2nd with a 2-1 win over the Frog, while the Pheasant regained the winning thread with a 3-0 battering of the Brams.
Here is that table. Let me know if anything is wrong.
Well, another week in the bag and another set of astonishing results. The Bell & Bottle continued their amazing run of scalps with a 3-0 demolition of the Evil Empire, allowing the Queen's Head to leap to the top with a 2-1 win over our erstwhile champions, the Wanderers. Meanwhile the Brewers served up a 3-0 creaming against the Hope & Anchor, scoring as many points in the third leg as the oppo managed in the entire game. Sadly they then decided to turn on the style in the beer leg, which meant that most of our team went home feeling a little bit poorer and not nearly as drunk as they'd like to be. Poor show. I may have to deduct a point or two for such bare-faced insolence (not that they have many to deduct in the first place).
Please keep those scores coming in. Here are the ones I have so far.
Queen's Head 2 - 1 Wanderers Norreys Barn 3 - 0 Dog & Duck (forfeit) 3 Brewers 3 - 0 Hope & Anchor Elephant & Castle 0 - 3 Bell & Bottle
Disasters all round this week, as the Evil Empire returned to form by shooting the Pheasant down 3-0, while the Queen's Head also served up a 3-0 kicking to the Hope & Anchor. The Jolly Farmer, previously only a point behind the leaders, now languish a further point behind after winning only 2-1 against the Wanderers. Meanwhile the Brewers' 5-game run of winning against crap teams has come to a predictable end, as the Bell & Bottle tore us a new one with a fairly comprehensive 2-1 victory. Brewers hearts were broken early in the first leg when, with the oppo chasing ten, some knob called Jordan drilled a particularly selfish SIX to settle nerves early for his team. The general consensus, in the Brewers camp at least, is that he is an almighty scrote. Happily the Brewers had the last laugh as their heroic and jaw-droppingly handsome captain tossed in a six of his own in the beer leg. The general consensus here is that it was thoroughly deserved and much more beautiful than the previous one, which everyone had forgotten about by then and wasn't that good anyway. So well done to Bill, our captain, hero and saviour. We could all learn a lot by his example.
Please keep those scores coming in. Some of you are proving to be particularly slack. So stop it.
Another week of fun and frolics is in the bag, and many of the results are in. Shock of the week trophy must go to Norreys Barn, who tore up the formbook with a stunning victory over erstwhile leaders the Elephant & Castle. Jaws dropped and bookies cheered as the previously-winless Norreys roared their way to a 2-1 decision over the Evil Empire, lifting themselves clear of the relegation zone and breaking one or two elephantine hearts in the process. Heroism abounded too at the Brewers, where the Pheasant suffered the ignominy of losing the second leg 5-4, and were twice denied a consolation leg by the last-stick valiance of a certain captain. After both the 3-stick and 1-stick playoffs failed to separate the teams, it was decided to let the beer leg decide it, and happily the Brewers prevailed by a single point, for probably the least-deserved 4 points in the history of the game. Meanwhile the Wanderers returned to form with a 3-0 bludgeoning of the Hope & Anchor and find themselves creeping up the table like some sort of endobiotic fungus, while the high-flying Queen's Head also suffered their first defeat of the season, a 2-1 reverse at the hands of the Bell & Bottle.
Here is the latest league table, although I am missing a couple of results due to teams failing to inform me. Enjoy!
Well, nearly all the results are in this week. The Bell & Bottle proved their competence with a shock 2-1 win over the Wanderers, while the Queen's Head continued their impressive run with a 2-1 decision over the Pheasant. Here are all those further results, avec league table.
Jolly 2 - 1 Hope & Anchor Bell & Bottle 2 - 1 Wanderers Pheasant 1 - 2 Queen's Head
Well, so far only two results in from week 5, but seeing as one of them was a victory for us I think it's only fitting for me to gloat about it. Here at the Brewers we continued our streak of mediocrity triumphing over mediocrity with a nail-biting 2-1 win against Norreys Barn. Meanwhile the Evil Empire notched up a 3-0 cakewalk against the increasingly-shite Frog & Wicket to cement their position at the top of the table. Let's hope somebody can thump them (metaphorically) in the near future, otherwise we might have to send someone in to thump them in a more literal sense. Don't forget to send those scores in!
Another week is in the books and with any luck everyone worked out where the hell they were supposed to go this week. Sadly the Evil Empire - otherwise known as the Elephant & Castle - notched another 3-0 win against the frankly crap Dog & Duck, while the Wanderers are also surging with a 3-0 win over the previously ascendant Pheasant. The good news is that the Brewers are also on an upward curve after trouncing the Frog & Wicket 3-0. Some might call it great captaincy. Others might just put it down to the other team being shite. I'll let you be the judge.
Here are the provisional scores. And, just for fun, here is a provisional league table, seeing as we're doing so well now.
Here, once again, are all the weekly results. Sadly the Brams forfeited to the Elephant & Castle after misreading the schedule, but apart from that everyone else played, and there were one or two real surprises. Erstwhile co-leaders the Frog & Wicket tasted their first ever 3-0 mauling at the merciless hands of the Queen's Head, while the Pheasant is also now flying high after whitewashing the Hope & Anchor. However, somebody does need to beat the Elephant & Castle fairly soon before they start running away with it. Actually turning up for the game in the first place would be a good start.
Well, my link to the league table doesn't seem to work. Super. Here it is in shit form instead. I'm sure you get the idea.
Incidentally, the Three Brewers Open Championship was retained by the reigning champion, who everyone agreed was by far and away the deserved winner, as well as being a thoroughly splendid fellow into the bargain. There he is pictured above. What a very handsome chap he is.
As you all know games will resume next week (3rd) with our usual week 3 fixtures. Here at the Brewers we will be having our very own open championship this week as we're not all that bothered about watching Barcelona stuff the Mancs. If anyone fancies coming along then feel free - come and etch your name in Three Brewers' folklore. The winner also gets to trouser everyone's entry fees (£3), not to mention a spectacularly shit plastic trophy. Stick-off is at 8, for those who are interested. See you there!
Week 2 of the league is in the can, and with any luck most teams actually read their e-mails and worked out which sodding team they were supposed to be playing this week. Unfortunately this failed to happen at the Bramshill Hunt, where the Three Brewers pitched up to play their game, swiftly followed by the Frog & Wicket, apparently oblivious to the fact that they were meant to be at the Emmbrook Inn. Much hilarity ensued. Happily the Frog swiftly got the message and fucked off to their expected venue - which was fortunate for them, as they ended up winning 2-1. As, incidentally, did the Brewers. Hurrah for both of us.
Here are some provisional scores for Week Two. Please don't forget - PLEASE, FOR FUCK'S SAKE, DON'T FORGET - that there are no games next week owing to the Champion's League final. You'll just have to entertain youselves.
Probably a bit pointless to do this after only one week, but there you go. We had one forfeit this week (the Brams) and one postponement. The forfeited game goes down as having been played, with the Queen's Head officially winning 3-0, although they only get 3 points.
P.S. Apologies for the crapness of the league table. I didn't write it to look like that but for some reason it came out like that anyway. I'll try harder in the future.
Well this season's league didn't exactly start as planned for many of the teams, not least of all us at the Brewers, with 3-0 victories raining down from all sides. Anyway, it's a good job the first game is the 'official warm-up game', and therefore doesn't count towards the overall standings. I did tell everyone that at the meeting, didn't I?
I will post all the results once I have them in, but for now you can feast your eyes on the very latest schedule. I'm sure it won't be the last.
Don't forget to send those results in!
